WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SWIPE YOUR CARD?

According to our partner, 97% of companies get breached. Even the largest organizations can't spend enough to protect their data. Read the summary and view the CBS video segment, below.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE TARGET BREACH, AND OTHERS:

The Target credit card breach was a feature story for cybersecurity last December. However, less people were aware of other large organizations who were also hit like P.F. Changs and Home Depot- losing millions of customer credit card numbers to similar hackers. Even less people know that the breach in Target was detected, but a combination of things caused the alert to be overlooked.

FireEye spoke on the Target breach by saying that the company invested a lot of money in security, but that the hackers were just too good and too persistent. The other factor that caused hackers to make off with the information was the out-dated security system still in place that generated too many alerts for more minor issues, causing FireEye's warnings to be lost in the noise.

60 Minutes with FireEye

On average the time of infection to the time hackers are discovered is 229 days. By then, credit cards and financial information can be on any of the dozens of sites selling stolen credit card information for criminals to take advantage of.

Stolen and weak passwords are attributed to a lot of security breaches. Passwords like 1234 and your pet's name are not strong enough to keep hackers out. Individuals can protect themselves by investing time in password protection and monitoring their own account information to detect problems early on. Contact your financial institution immediately, even small discrepencies matter.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN LEARN FROM THESE ATTACKS:

FireEye outlines what businesses can do to mitigate the problem:

  •   Don't let hackers access the information that's really important.
  •   Control the information so they don't get out with sensitive data.
  •   Detect and respond sooner and exposure can be limited.

Our partnes at FireEye are monitoring businesses 24/7 and detect over 100,000 attacks every week. All businesses are vulnerable, but it is worth your time and budget to invest in monitoring services like these.
