Guide to the 2019 Huntsman Golf Classic

So you’re interested in the golf tournament. Or, maybe you’ve already registered. What now? Here’s your quick guide to how the tournament works, complete with photos from past tournaments.

1. The morning

Breakfast

At 7:30am, golfer check-in begins inside the clubhouse. During the next hour, you have time to chat with other golfers, enter prize drawings, and grab breakfast.

2. Getting Ready

Pro golf tentThe golf carts will be waiting outside, already tagged with your names and stuffed with goody bags. The carts even have portable cell phone chargers inside, in case your devices need a little juice. The Pro Golf tent is also outside. Open from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, this tent is where you can get range tokens at no cost or grab rental clubs, as well as spend the Pro Golf bucks given to you when you check in. With a foursome, each member gets $100 worth of Pro Golf bucks to spend at the tent on things like clothing and golf gear.

We ask that all golfers make it to their carts and are ready to go by 8:00 am.

3. Short Program

At 8:15 am, our short program will start. Golfers at the carts will be able to hear from Huntsman Cancer Institute representatives. They'll update us on what major strides have been made at HCI recently. We try to bring a researcher (and sometimes a patient) to tell us about their experiences at the institute.

4. Shotgun start

42921224780_7fcda73561_oAt 8:30 am, marshals will lead the golfers to the courses for the start of the 18-hole tournament. We golf on two courses at Wasatch Mountain Golf Course: the Mountain and the Lake. Wasatch may be a good distance to travel for some of us, but we choose to go there every year because the course is so beautiful. Pro-tip: it’s often cold in the mornings and warms up later, so dress in layers or bring a jacket.

5. Hole contests and other activities

As you golf, there will be contests or activities at many of the holes. In past years, we’ve had things like masseuses, catch-and-release fly fishing, and testing out how fast you can hit the golf ball.

6. The Turn

Hot dogs at The Turn

During the tournament, there will come a point when you reach a place called “The Turn”. At a physical turn in the road which both courses hit, you can grab some freshly-grilled hot dogs or a snack from a food truck.

The Turn will also be stocked with cold drinks, and you can take a momentary break there to participate in a contest on a putting green.

7. Lunch

Lunch

After you break at The Turn, you’ll continue golfing until you finish all 18 holes. After you do, you’ll return to the clubhouse where you can turn your score card in at the scoring desk and pick up lunch. While you eat, the winners of hole contests will be announced and awarded their prizes. We’ll end by announcing and awarding the tournament winners: the top 3 golfers from each course.

8. After the tournament

Usually, we're finished by about 2:00 pm. The Pro Golf tent will be open for another hour, and the food truck from The Turn will be parked near it, in case you’d like a snack on your way out.

The golf tournament is a lot of fun, to say the least. If you haven't registered yet, please consider it. We hope to see you there.
